How a rain-affected target is calculated, in plain terms
The method that resets a target is often called impenetrable, but its core is one simple claim about what a batting side still has left to spend.

The problem the method has to solve
When rain removes overs from an innings, scaling the target by the proportion of overs remaining produces an obviously unfair result for one side or the other. A side that has already lost most of its wickets cannot accelerate in the way a side with a full batting order still to come can. Any workable method therefore has to treat overs and wickets as two distinct things the batting side spends as its innings proceeds.
That two-resource idea is the whole conceptual content of the standard approach, and everything else is machinery for attaching numbers to it. Once the idea is accepted, the apparent complexity becomes bookkeeping rather than argument about principle.
Resources rather than runs
The method treats every innings as beginning with a full stock of scoring resource, drawn down both by overs consumed and by wickets lost. Losing an early wicket removes more resource than losing a late one, because a top-order dismissal costs both a batter and the freedom to attack. Losing overs late in an innings removes more resource than losing them early, since those are the overs in which scoring rates are naturally highest.
A table giving the resource remaining for each combination of overs left and wickets lost is what turns the idea into an arithmetic exercise. The revised target is then the first-innings score adjusted by the ratio of resource that each side genuinely had available to it.
Why the target can rise
Spectators are often surprised when a side chasing in a shortened match is set a target higher than the score originally made against them. This happens when the interruption falls on the chasing side, which then knows in advance that it has fewer overs and can plan the whole innings around that. A side beginning a short chase can attack from the first ball, whereas the side batting first had to pace an innings it expected to be longer.
The adjustment compensates for that advantage, and the arithmetic can carry the required score above the original one. Read as a statement about the certainty each side enjoyed rather than about fairness in the abstract, the outcome stops looking perverse.
Where the method is weakest
The resource table is built from patterns across a large body of past matches, so it describes a typical innings rather than the particular one being played. A side whose batting is unusually deep or unusually top-heavy is poorly described by an average, and the adjustment may flatter or punish it accordingly. Very short chases stretch the model furthest, because the relationship between overs, wickets and scoring rate is least stable at the extremes.
Formats with heavy scoring have required periodic revision of the underlying tables, since the average innings the method describes has shifted over time. These are limitations of calibration rather than of concept, and no proposed alternative has escaped the same trade-off between simplicity and fit.
What a captain does with it
Because a match can be stopped at any moment, both sides play with one eye on where they stand against the par score for the current over. That produces a distinctive kind of cricket under threatening skies, where a chasing side accelerates to get ahead of the line rather than to win outright. The fielding side responds by prioritising wickets, since each dismissal moves the par score in its favour more sharply than a quiet over does.
A captain who ignores the par line and plans only for the full allocation risks losing a match that never reaches its scheduled conclusion. The method therefore changes tactics long before it changes any target, which is the part of its influence least often discussed.
