Why rounds exist at all

A track has a limited number of lanes, so an entry larger than that number simply cannot be resolved in a single race. Rounds reduce the field progressively, with each round eliminating enough athletes that the next can be run within the lanes available. The number of rounds follows from the size of the entry and from the number of days the programme allows for that particular event.

Each additional round costs the surviving athletes another race, which is a real physical cost in events contested at maximum effort. Designing a programme therefore means balancing the number of athletes admitted against the freshness of those who eventually reach the final.

Automatic places and time qualification

Most rounds advance a fixed number of finishers from each heat automatically, together with a number of the fastest remaining times across all the heats. Automatic places reward position, which is what a race is actually contested on, and they allow an athlete to run tactically rather than flat out. Time places exist because heats are not equally strong, and an athlete in a fast heat may finish outside the automatic places while running extremely well.

The mixture is a compromise between rewarding racing and correcting for the luck of a draw that nobody controlled. It also produces the familiar situation in which a later heat runs knowing precisely what time is required to advance.

Seeding and the draw

Heats are seeded so that the strongest athletes are distributed across them rather than being concentrated by accident into one. Seeding uses season performances and ranking, which are imperfect measures but are the only information available before the competition has begun. Lane allocation within a heat is then drawn, usually with the better-placed athletes receiving the middle lanes in the later rounds.

Middle lanes are preferred in events run around a bend because the curve is gentler and an athlete can see rivals on both sides. These allocations matter enough that the procedure is published, since an unexplained lane draw would attract immediate suspicion from everybody affected.

The repechage and what it changes

A repechage gives athletes eliminated in the first round a second opportunity to advance rather than relying on comparison of times. It replaces the time-based route with another race, which means qualification is decided by racing rather than by arithmetic across separate heats. The cost is an additional round for those who use it, leaving them more fatigued than athletes who advanced at the first attempt.

That asymmetry is deliberate, since progressing immediately ought to carry some advantage over needing a second opportunity to do so. The format also adds sessions to a programme, which is why it suits some events and some schedules considerably better than others.

Field events and the qualifying standard

Field events narrow their entry differently, using a qualifying mark that admits any athlete achieving it during the opening round. A minimum number advances regardless, so a round held in poor conditions where nobody reaches the mark still produces a full final. This method rewards absolute performance rather than relative placing, which suits events where athletes are competing against a measurement.

It also allows an athlete to stop once the standard has been achieved, conserving attempts and energy for the final itself. The choice between standard-based and place-based qualification therefore reflects what each kind of event is fundamentally measuring.
